Eligibility for Assessments and Game Play
Applies to: Skaters who want to undertake star level skating assessments, attend external
scrims, or participate in bouting level games and tournaments (e.g. Statewide Stampede).
As a club we support our members to participate at whatever level they are most comfortable,
consistent with their skills and abilities.
If you want to participate in game play or be assessed for a higher star level you must:
• Demonstrate skating skills consistent with that level
• Meet minimum attendance requirements.
Our attendance requirements provide a level of flexibility to support you in your derby journey. We
encourage you to aim for more than minimum attendance, so you can improve your skating (and team
skills for game play), and so that unexpected events don’t impact your eligibility.
General attendance requirements
Be on time:
Arriving on time and participating fully in sessions supports the trainer’s planning and
ensures you earn your attendance points.
If you arrive after the session has begun, your attendance may be counted but marked
as ‘Late’.
If you participate in less than three quarters of the session (arriving very late and/or
leaving early), your attendance may not be counted for eligibility purposes.
The session trainer records the appropriate point(s) on the Attendance spreadsheet.
If you haven’t met attendance requirements:
We will prioritise your safety (and the safety of others) when considering whether
additional points can be applied to bring up your attendance numbers.
Other attendance requirements differ depending on what you want to do – these are
separated below into what relates to:
• SkateFit and Juniors
• Adult league (roller derby game play)
SkateFit and Juniors
We encourage you to have your skills assessed, either to provide feedback on what you can work on or
to gain your White Star if you are interested in progressing to roller derby training.
The session trainers discuss ongoing progress with individual skaters, and collaborate with the SkateFit
Coordinator/Juniors Coordinator to confirm whether the skater is ready for their White Star assessment.
Assessments are usually held at the end of each term, where skaters are keen to participate.
In exceptional circumstances the training team may decide to hold an assessment to allow a skilled
skater to undergo assessment at another time.
Eligibility:
Assessment eligibility includes your attendance at SkateFit and Juniors sessions. You must
attend at least 60% of sessions in a term to be eligible for assessment.
Attending other venues:
SkateFit runs at multiple venues, and you are welcome to attend sessions at other
venues at no extra cost. Participating at other venues can assist with developing your
skills and contribute to your eligibility for assessment.
Exceptions:
If you are unable to make attendance due to work or other fixed commitments but still
wish to be assessed for White Star, talk to your trainer.
The trainers team, in collaboration with the SkateFit/Juniors Coordinator may decide to
reduce/waive attendance requirements if you:
• Have previously completed at least one term of SkateFit/Juniors
• Can demonstrate that you are already an experienced skater
• Have achieved White Star level or above in the past (through GRRD or another club)
League
Roller derby is a contact sport, so to participate safely in external scrims, games and tournaments as a
skater we expect you to maintain your skate skills and meet attendance requirements.
Attendance is also an important part of preparing for assessment if you want to ‘level up’ to Red,
Orange or Green Star.
The more sessions you attend, the more you can improve your skills. Beyond training, you can also
attend SkateFit sessions, or provide on-skates support at Juniors sessions, at no extra cost.
Calculating attendance:
Attendance is calculated from the number of GRRD league training sessions in the weeks
leading up to an assessment, game day or scrimmage. These are called ‘available
points’.
For assessments and game days this is calculated over six weeks (maximum 12 available
points from two training sessions per week).
For external scrimmages this is calculated over four weeks (maximum 8 available points
from two training sessions per week).
This may change, however, if a session is cancelled due to public holidays, low
participant numbers, or the venue being closed. The time frame will stay the same but
the total number of available points will be less.
Eligibility for assessment and game days
Assessments include going for your:
• White Star (positional)
• Red Star (low contact)
• Orange Star (modified contact)
• Green Star (full contact / bouting)
Game days include advertised and promoted cross-club events, such as Statewide
Stampede rounds, Pride Cup, East Coast Clash, etc., where you are skating:
• As a representative of GRRD (e.g. Pivot City Rollers)
• As a guest skater for another league
• In a ModCon (modified contact) scrimmage
You must earn at least 60% of the available points for the six weeks leading up to the
assessment/game.
At least 50% of available points must be from derby training (see below).
Exceptions:
When deciding who can participate in game days (bouting or ModCon), we will prioritise
skaters who meet attendance requirements. While individual skills are important, it’s
also vital to practice teamwork.
If you have not quite made attendance due to work, other fixed commitments, or
unplanned events, but still wish to participate in game play, talk to your trainer.
The trainers team (session trainers and League Coordinator) may allow you to
participate in game days if:
• Your skills are consistently at the appropriate star level AND
• You have consistently demonstrated your commitment to team development during training sessions.
Each case is assessed individually, taking into account:
• length of time at that star level
• number of games the skater has participated in during the last 12 months
• whether attendance is a regular/ongoing issue
Decisions and reasons are minuted in either the trainers team meeting or the GRRD
committee meeting.
Eligibility for training type scrimmages:
Training type scrimmages are scrimmages held by other (usually larger) clubs as part of
their usual training sessions.
You must earn at least 50% of the available points for the four weeks leading up to the scrimmage.
Accruing attendance points:
The minimum 50% of points that must be from derby training be through:
The additional points required to bring your attendance to 60% (or 50% for external
scrimmages) can also come from training, and we encourage this as it builds skills,
teamwork and league cohesion.
We also understand that people have lives outside derby, and that our club covers a
large geographical area which may make attending all training sessions difficult. So these
additional points can be accrued in other ways within the same six-week time frame.
Recording attendance:
Trainers:
• After you run a training session, fill in the Attendance on Revsport. Coordinator to transfer this information to spreadsheet in the Google Drive.
League Coordinator:
• Monitor attendance using the Attendance spreadsheet and RevSport
• Monitor attendance before upcoming assessments, game days and scrimmages
• Contact skaters when they are at risk of not making attendance, and support them
to catch up so they have the best chance of participating.
Skaters:
• Inform the League Coordinator if you wish to include SkateFit or Juniors attendance
in your attendance points.
Contact the League Coordinator if you have questions about your attendance. You have
the right to access the information we keep about your attendance.
Cancelled sessions:
Training may be cancelled when:
• Less than four skaters responded ‘going’ to the ‘League Training RSVPs’ poll in
Discord by 8pm the night before (e.g. 8pm Saturday for Sunday training, or 8pm
Monday for Tuesday training)
• The session is flagged to be risk of non-attendance due to other events that fall on
the same day (e.g. Easter, Mother’s Day), and an early poll confirms low attendance
• Extreme heat/weather makes it unsafe to travel or train
• The venue is closed, another booking takes priority, or any other situation beyond
our control (e.g. extreme weather)
The session trainer will give you as much notice as possible if a session needs to be
cancelled.
Cancelled sessions reduce the total number of available points (not the % requirement)
if they are within the attendance eligibility time frames. See examples in the ‘Accruing
attendance points’ table above.
Note: League training sessions must have a trainer and at least four skaters to proceed.
If less, a ‘peer led’ training session may go ahead if all wishing to attend agree.
