YOUR SKATING JOURNEY
By joining Skate Fit, you are automatically a member of our club, and that opens up so many doors for you. What door you choose to walk through, well that's up to you.
SKATE FIT: If you want to skate, get fit, stay social and have a bit of fun while you do it, then Skate Fit is for you. Skate Fit is a weekly session run during school terms that allows you to progress as a skater at your own pace. There are activity options for all levels of skaters in a welcoming and inclusive setting.
WHITE STAR: The last session of each term of Skate Fit includes a White Star Assessment. Skaters can choose to be assessed on basic levels of endurance, sprint starts, glides, stepping, stops, sticky skating and strength. White Star is simply a skating milestone. It can be your ticket to Roller Derby, or simply something you do for yourself.
NSO: NSO stands for Non-Skating Official. These are the fabulous people that make a game of roller derby possible! There are a range of rolls from Penalty Box Timers to scorekeepers, it takes a minimum of five NSO’s to officiate a game of derby. Our skaters learn NSO roles as they progress, but having dedicated NSO’s is a huge part of our club - we love our officials!
LEAGUE: League is the term used for skaters who learn to play Roller Derby. Skaters that choose this journey will work with our Trainers to progress their skills at the pace that suits them. Starting at non-contact, to low contact, then moderate contact, all the way to a Full Contact Bouting Skater. It's your pace, your choices, your skating journey!
TRAINER: GRRD is a peer lead club, meaning we are all learning together. Our Trainers step up to teach newer skaters, while continuing their own skating journey. You can complete the Trainer Course as you work through the Star Assessments (yup, there's more after White!) and our Trainers can work with you while you gain confidence and experience.
REFEREE: Referees are crucial to a game of derby; it takes seven referees on skates to make a game possible. Yes, seven! To become a Ref, you need to complete your Yellow Star Assessment (that's the one after White) and a Ref Course, but we will be with you every step of the way. You can shadow existing Refs as you learn the rules - because there's a lot of them!
